Taylor Update

5 Mar

The subject that keeps coming up most in comments lately is Taylor, our new sofa from Thrive Furniture.  How is he?  What do we think of him?  Is he everything we dreamed of and more?

Well, honestly, this is going to be a short post.  The answer is:  We think he’s the bee’s knees, baby.  Delivery took about four weeks and he came on a wood pallet wrapped in cardboard and cellophane type stuff.  As we unwrapped him, anticipation like taking off bandages after plastic surgery I imagine, he was more beautiful than I imagined.  The upholstery is much softer than I expected and a perfectly soft celery color (Belgian Sage).

He had that new furniture smell, which is nice for about five minutes and then less than appealing.  Fortunately, that left quickly and there he sat beckoning me.  The first sit was a bit stiff, but that’s to be expected.  We were getting to know each other after all.  In fact, I will be honest and say that Brett was a little turned off by that.  He prefers softer sofas and beds and everything.  I tend to prefer firmer support.  (You should have seen us trying to buy a bed.)  However, a reader let me know that Thrive furniture does soften up with time.

They use 1.8lb high density foam for the cushions, which is the softest foam recommended for a sofa.  (Perch uses 2.5lb, I believe, which is really firm, to the point of feeling like you’re sitting on a board.)  Thanks, Brittany.  The Perch sofa she refers to is the Gracie, which I had a little crush on for a while too.

The living room is now coming together with Taylor sitting across from Betty and Joan, with the new Parvez Taj art piece hanging above.  To the left is an end table I found at the Bellevue Goodwill store for $19.  I so wish they had two.  I think that one will eventually end up in the bedroom next to the re-upholstered gray chair to form my little reading nook.

Yesterday, I sat on Taylor for quite a while chatting with Brett and my in-laws.  In the space of an hour or so, Taylor already began to soften up and form around me in the most wonderful way.  It was also great to be able to sit in the living room and see everything coming together.  I had spent the morning hanging photos and art in the dining room, which I could see with a view out the window to the forest.  It was one of those awesome moments in this process where it all clicks and you feel like maybe you are accomplishing something after all.

And then, of course, I started thinking…and we need a rug in here and the dining room.  And some lamps and a coffee table….

That piece above your sofa looks so great with the color of the sofa. Still so jealous that you found those chairs like you did!

Thanks! I am feeling like it needs a little color. Maybe some orange pillows or something.

Yay for accomplishing stuff! I am still trying to accomplish finding a house…sigh. But at least I can keep up with what you are doing while my search continues. Bravo, you!

Thanks! Slowly but surely. And never really quite fast enough for me.

Taylor is really beautiful! I have to say, I like a firmer sofa too. 😉

Thanks! I think he’s going to end up being just right, as Goldilocks would say.
